What are the biggest concerns when building a garage?

Now I may have taken my mouth full with a headline like that but if you’re thinking of constructing your own garage, either from nothing or doing a re-build, haven’t you just once thought that the whole project might go wrong? I know that I have at therefore I thought that if might be beneficial to talk about what could go wrong when you do these types of DIY projects.

First of all I believe that the biggest mistake to ever make is to skip the planning part. There are so many things that could go wrong and that you can’t foresee with just 5 minutes of thinking things through. If you on the other hand sit down and think on paper, your chances of success increases drastically.

Before starting any construction you need to check with the authorities. It would be a shame to start anything and then have to pull it down afterwards. It might be a time consuming process to talk to the authorities but you avoid fatal errors and violations of rules and regulations.

Next step is drawing the construction. Most of the times you’ll find that the authorities will want you drawings before you start the project but you should still get the rules before drawing anything.

Once the drawings are approved you can start finding materials and powertools or you can hire someone to help you. There is one “middle road” which is to get a garage kits that only needs to be assembled. Often times you’ll find that these kits don’t come in the style that you want but I thought that you should know that they are there.

In future posts I’ll go into some of the construction details as well as talk about the power tools that you might need. Until then, take care.
